We were supposed to have left Bali last night and been in Celukan Bawang, Bali this morning. However, there were some unexplained “issues” so they were not able to sail. Fortunately, they did give us some tour options for today.
More driving in
Bali, through a much more rural area than we have visited so far on our visit
to this island. And we saw lots of rice terraces and rice paddies along the way.
Here was some drying rice...
and statues at the entrance to a family compound.
Our destination was the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We have visited rice terraces before on Bali, but these were exceptional. They also had plenty of lush green rice growing in them and water. And they were much more extensive than the terraces we visited before. There were terraces practically as far as the eye can see (nearly 1500 acres).
With beautiful mountains overlooking in the distance and at the near end of the valley.
The terraces date back to the 9th century.
The irrigation water to the terraces is fed by water wheels.

We had a “snack” at a restaurant overlooking the terraces. The snack was sufficient for lunch and consisted of peanuts, fried banana, a mangosteen, a snakeskin fruit, some green paste balls with a sweet center and a doughy dish wrapped in a leaf. We tried everything and pretty much cleaned our plates. Most of it was new to us and very tasty.
Albert, Caroline, Flo and Nellie were on the same tour with us (they had only small vans so the six of us made up one van).
We were back on
the boat by midday. Great shore
excursion.
