Feb 15 – The Beach on Rap Island and Snorkeling

We have arrived in Koh Samui, Thailand and anchored quite a distance from shore.  We took local tenders (although they were more like the local tourist cruise boats) into dock and transferred to speed boats.  The ride over was a bit bumpy but no one on the boat got sick.

The destination was Rap Island where we waded in and then headed over to a beach for some cooling off and a swim.  It’s a pretty little island with hammocks and picnic tables and a bar.  However, it was a bit of a rough crossing so no one had come out with supplies for the bar.

The beach was pretty and the water turquoise and blue.

Everyone headed out into the refreshing water for a dip.

There was a fair amount of trash that had washed up from the waters.  A few of us picked up a some of the trash.  There was a pretty good pile of it when we left.  Apparently there are groups that do occasionally come out to clear out the trash.

After about an hour we were back in the boat and headed off to another island where we dropped anchor a short distance out and everyone headed in for some snorkeling.  There were a few other boats here as well Unfortunately, there have been some recent storms so the water was very murky.  Visibility was really bad.  We did managed to photograph a few fish but it certainly wasn’t the best snorkeling experience we’ve had.

Then it was a short ride to Koh Taen...

where we again waded ashore and headed to a nearby restaurant where we were served a very nice buffet lunch overlooking the water.

Rocks marking the channel to the restaurant.

After some rest it was back on the boats and back to port where we again boarded tenders and were back on the Symphony by about 4:00.  A pretty good day, even if the snorkeling was a bit disappointing.

We disembark tomorrow so after showering Paul did some laundry and we spent the rest of the afternoon packing.
